A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. This year will represent the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the main draw.

The tournament indicated that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Open's singles competition, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
