Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, reacting to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded players for making hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.

What Sparked the Latest Dispute

Wilson's response came after Payton delivered remarks after the Broncos' historic comeback win over the New York. The coach remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.

Context of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • Wilson was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million contract.
  • The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to the team hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in TV commentary.
  • Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the ugly split between the player and his coach.
